Vinícius Júnior received a direct red card for pulling the hair of Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba during Real Madrid's 1-0 victory on Saturday, October 10. Yan Diomandé scored his first goal for Real Madrid to secure the win, but the dismissal overshadowed his breakthrough performance. Vinícius initially celebrated what appeared to be a second goal before referee Isidro Díaz de Mera used a VAR review to disallow the strike and issue the ejection.
The red card reduced Real Madrid to ten men in the 73rd minute and puts Vinícius at risk of missing the upcoming El Clásico against Barcelona. Following the match, manager José Mourinho boycotted his post-match press conference. The victory kept Real Madrid six points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.
