Former two-weight world champion Andre Ward anticipates a compelling and aggressive fight if Naoya Inoue and Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez meet in the future. Ward advises Rodriguez to acclimatise to the bantamweight division before challenging the undisputed super-bantamweight champion, likely in early 2027.
Rodriguez, 26, recently became a three-division world champion after stopping Antonio Vargas to win the WBA bantamweight title. The victory has intensified talk of a future showdown with Inoue, who holds all four belts at 122lbs. Ward, a Hall of Fame analyst, suggests that a period of adjustment for Rodriguez would be the correct strategic move. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he recommended a patient approach for the younger fighter. “I think that Bam has to settle into this weight class just a little bit, [and have] another fight, maybe two fights, and then I think that fight [with Inoue] will be just right.”
Ward then detailed the tactical dynamic of the potential matchup, contrasting the offensive approaches of the two champions. He described both as highly aggressive but noted a fundamental difference in how they apply pressure. “It’s a very interesting matchup between these two, because they’re both very violent fighters. The difference is … Naoya Inoue – he’s going to try to kick your front door down.”
He elaborated on this stylistic clash, characterising Inoue as a direct, power-punching fighter who moves forwards and backwards with explosive force. In contrast, he identified Rodriguez as a fighter who relies more on lateral movement to create openings. “And he’s going to do it with a lot of explosiveness; he’s going to have a lot of power. Bam wants to get you on the angle. Naoya Inoue is a North and South guy.”
Before any potential fight with Inoue can be made, Rodriguez may first seek to unify the bantamweight division. A bout against WBO champion Christian Medina has been suggested, which would serve as another test at 118lbs. This path would allow Rodriguez to build further experience at the weight before moving up to challenge for Inoue’s undisputed crown in what would be one of the most significant fights in boxing’s lower weight classes.
