Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has proposed former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. as an opponent for Moses Itauma and new IBF champion Filip Hrgovic. The potential matchmaking hinges on Ruiz successfully defeating Damian Knyba in Newark on Friday night.
Hearn outlined his plans following Hrgovic’s ninth-round stoppage victory over Itauma in London. Itauma ran out of steam hunting for an early knockout and was hospitalised with severe exhaustion after the bell. Despite the loss, Hearn believes the 21-year-old retains his explosive offensive speed and broad commercial appeal.
“I was looking at some of the guys that we got, right? I’m looking at guys like Andy Ruiz, who fights on Friday. I’m saying, yes, please to Itauma and to Hrgovic,” Hearn told DAZN Boxing.
The entire proposal requires Ruiz to perform convincingly against Knyba in Newark. The former world champion weighed in at 254 pounds after shedding 40 pounds during camp, indicating serious preparation. Still, dropping weight does not automatically guarantee sharp ring reflexes, punch resistance, or endurance against a rangy, upright opponent like Knyba.
Hearn added: “If Andy Ruiz shows form this Friday night, he’s a real problem.”
Significant obstacles remain for both proposed routes. Frank Warren of Queensberry Promotions manages Itauma and favors a patient rebuilding strategy. Following the developmental method used with Daniel Dubois after stoppage defeats against Joe Joyce and Oleksandr Usyk, Warren prefers steady confidence builders over exposing his raw prospect to Ruiz’s inside combinations.
Hrgovic has even fewer reasons to consider Hearn’s offer. Leaving London with the IBF belt gives the Croatian complete control over his immediate schedule. Hrgovic immediately called for unification bouts against Dubois or Agit Kabayel. While Ruiz offers name value, Hrgovic’s championship title provides the necessary leverage to demand the division’s largest stadium paydays without risking his position.
Riyadh Season’s cross-promotional model allows Matchroom and Queensberry to discuss potential matchups openly. However, if Ruiz spends ten rounds struggling to close the distance against Knyba, Hearn’s heavyweight plans will evaporate before London executives pick up the phone.
