Anthony Joshua is risking a massive blockbuster showdown against Tyson Fury by refusing to move the fight from Wembley to Madison Square Garden. Contract disputes with event organizers Sela threaten to collapse the bout entirely, leaving Joshua’s career completely stalled.
The former heavyweight king refuses to step back. Event organizers Sela have settled on staging the fight at Madison Square Garden in New York. But Joshua is standing firm on British soil. Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that the UK venue clause was written into the agreement specifically at Joshua’s request.
Pressures are piling on behind the scenes. Outsiders are trying to phone the former champion directly to bend his resolve before time expires. Hearn described the situation, stating: “He’s under pressure because people are phoning him around the back. ‘Come on.’ And he said, ‘No, no, speak to Eddie.’ It’s like, ‘No, I want the fight in Britain. Guys, I’ve got to tell you, that’s what I signed for. That’s what I want.’ And he’s standing firm,”
Standing firm is a colossal risk. Sela holds the purse strings for the entire event. Hearn and Matchroom cannot force the financiers back to London if they refuse to move. Enforcing the venue clause will simply kill the fight instead of bringing it to Wembley. Winning a contractual argument gives Joshua no payday, no Fury fight, and no chance to rebuild his standing.
There is zero appetite for a backup plan. Hearn confirmed there is “absolutely no interest” in an interim fight while negotiations freeze. Joshua already took a tune-up fight against Kristian Prenga, where he suffered a nightmare start after being dropped twice in the opening round. Another warm-up bout offers zero appeal and immense risk.
Now time is running out. Matchroom sent an official contract addendum to Sela several days ago, but the organizers have offered no response. Matchroom CEO Frank Smith has already conceded the fight date is slipping away fast. Joshua must decide if holding his contractual ground is worth losing the biggest clash of his life.
