Jose Benavidez Sr Calls For David Benavidez to Fight Jai Opetaia in May 2027

Jose Benavidez Sr has publicly proposed a May 2027 fight between David Benavidez and former cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia.

Jose Benavidez Sr has called for David Benavidez to face former IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia in May 2027. The proposal marks the clearest indication yet that the Benavidez camp is prepared to finalize a long-debated division clash.

The public callout represents a noticeable shift in perspective from Team Benavidez. Jose Sr previously dismissed the Australian fighter, stating that Opetaia “gets hurt in every fight” against unheralded opponents and suggesting a bout against him would be “like taking a tune-up.” However, the trainer took to social media to alter that narrative directly. He posted online: “Let’s give the people what they want! May- Benavidez vs. Opetaia,” signaling a desire to deliver the matchup boxing supporters have requested.

Social media posts do not equate to formal contractual agreements, but the declaration carries structural weight. Jose Sr trains his son and serves as a primary decision-maker regarding fight selection. David Benavidez previously questioned Opetaia’s commercial draw compared to other options, despite acknowledging him as a premier talent in the division. Following his victory over Gilberto Ramirez on May 2, 2026, Benavidez reiterated that Opetaia represented a major fight, yet pointed to promotional separation as the main barrier preventing a deal.

Promotional alignment remains the primary hurdle for both camps. Opetaia’s association with Zuffa Boxing created friction, with Benavidez explicitly refusing to compete for a Zuffa title. Furthermore, schedule management presents an immediate test. Benavidez must successfully defend his position against Michal Cieslak on December 12, 2026, before any major multi-party negotiations can commence for 2027.

If Team Benavidez follows through on the May proposal, the callout will stand as an early intention of intent. If negotiations falter or an alternate rival is selected for May 2027, the social media activity will appear as strategic positioning designed to deflect public pressure.
