Can David Morrell Recover at Light Heavyweight?

Cuban boxer David Morrell has fallen out of the boxing conversation following a shocking 10th-round stoppage defeat to Zak Chelli on May 9. Chelli, who took the fight on just two weeks' notice, was trailing on the scorecards before hurting Morrell in the ninth round and finishing him in the tenth. The loss leaves Morrell with a 12-2 record and no confirmed return date.

The defeat exposed significant technical weaknesses in Morrell's defense, particularly his tendency to retreat in straight lines and cover up against the ropes. This passive defensive posture was previously exploited by David Benavidez in February 2025 and has proven even more exhausting for Morrell since moving up to the 175-pound light heavyweight division.
