Christian Mbilli’s team believes the postponement of his title fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez works in their favor. The undisputed super middleweight bout, originally set for September 12, will now take place in late October, giving both fighters more preparation time.
The challenger himself remains focused on the outcome, regardless of the date. Mbilli stated, “I’ve been waiting for this fight for years. One more month or one less won’t change anything. My time will come.” His comment underscores a patient confidence, suggesting the calendar shift does little to alter his own readiness for the career-defining opportunity in Riyadh.
His promoter, Camille Estephan of Eye of the Tiger Management, was more direct. He used the delay to apply pressure on the champion, framing the extra weeks as the removal of any potential justifications for a poor performance. “Whether it’s in September or October, Christian Mbilli will leave the ring victorious. And now more than ever, Canelo will have absolutely no excuse for not being fully prepared,” Estephan said. The statement puts the responsibility squarely on Alvarez to arrive in peak condition.
Still, more time in camp is unlikely to reverse the clear signs of wear on Alvarez. Recent performances have exposed a fighter whose reflexes and output have diminished. His loss to a smaller Terence Crawford and labored decision wins over William Scull, Edgar Berlanga, and Jaime Munguia showed a reliance on single power shots over volume and movement. He no longer dictates the pace for a full 12 rounds.
This trend sets up a difficult stylistic matchup. Mbilli is a relentless pressure fighter who thrives on a high work rate, forcing opponents to constantly move and counter. At this stage of his career, Alvarez lacks the consistent footwork to evade that pressure and does not throw the combinations needed to deter a forward-marching opponent. While a longer camp may help his conditioning, it will not restore the speed and agility of his prime. When the bell rings in October, he will still be an aging champion facing a challenger built to exploit his exact weaknesses.
