Canelo Alvarez Adjusts Training Style Ahead of Christian Mbilli Bout

Canelo Alvarez is incorporating more footwork into his training for his October 31 fight against Christian Mbilli in Riyadh, aiming to counter the WBC champion's high-volume pressure.

Canelo Alvarez is adopting a footwork-heavy strategy for his upcoming super middleweight clash against Christian Mbilli on October 31 in Riyadh. The 36-year-old aims to neutralize Mbilli’s pressure, but the increased movement risks accelerating his fatigue in the later rounds.

Training footage released by DAZN Boxing shows Alvarez actively circling the ring while working alongside former opponent Jaime Munguia. The adjustment signals that Alvarez and trainer Eddy Reynoso understand the danger of remaining stationary against Mbilli. The 28-year-old WBC champion enters behind continuous pressure, stays on the front foot, and throws sustained combinations even after his opening punches are blocked.

Alvarez traditionally conserves energy by holding his position, making minor defensive movements, and waiting to land heavy single counterpunches. But that approach aligns perfectly with Mbilli’s offensive strengths. Alvarez cannot remain behind a stationary guard and expect Mbilli to stop after one or two shots. He will have to move away before those attacks turn into sustained combinations to the head and body.

The physical reality of Alvarez’s career stage complicates this tactical adjustment. The fighter who walked down Gennadiy Golovkin in their 2018 rematch possessed the sharpness and vitality to stand in the pocket with elite pressure fighters. Eight years on, Alvarez operates at a slower pace and requires longer recovery periods between attacks.

Still, using the ring carries a heavy physical cost. Moving continuously to delay Mbilli’s offense will consume vital energy throughout the bout.

Concerns over Alvarez’s gas tank stem from his recent performance against Terence Crawford. In that fight, Alvarez landed 99 of 338 punches, averaging 28.2 attempts and 8.3 connects per round. Despite maintaining a minimal work rate, he still tired during the championship rounds. Defending extended combinations and constantly changing direction will consume stamina without showing up in his punch totals.

Munguia offers useful preparation in camp due to his size and combination punching, though he does not match Mbilli’s nonstop tempo. Alvarez is left with two exhausting options in Riyadh. Staying mobile could leave his legs depleted late in the fight, while remaining near the ropes allows Mbilli to overwhelm him with activity. Alvarez may need to land heavy shots early to prevent Mbilli from taking control.
