Canelo Alvarez will contest the WBC super-middleweight title against Christian Mbilli on 31 October in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Hall of Famer Tim Bradley has backed Alvarez to deliver a commanding performance in the Frenchman’s first world title defence.
Mbilli enters the bout as the full WBC 168lb champion after being upgraded from interim status following the retirement of Terence Crawford. Crawford became the undisputed champion at 168lb by defeating Alvarez via unanimous decision in September. On that same night, Mbilli defended his interim belt through a 10-round draw against Lester Martinez, showcasing his high-volume style.
Despite Mbilli’s relentless work rate, doubts persist over whether aggressive pressure alone can overcome Alvarez. Prior to his loss to Crawford, the 36-year-old Mexican had remained unbeaten since a 2022 light-heavyweight defeat against Dmitry Bivol. Alvarez is widely regarded as a far more technically proficient boxer than Mbilli, who throws punches in high volume but advances primarily in straight lines.
Speaking to FightHype, Bradley predicted a comfortable evening for Alvarez, remarking, “He’s going to piece him up” when asked about the fight.
Bradley believes Alvarez’s counterpunching ability will prove decisive against Mbilli’s aggressive approach. “He going to piece Mbilli’s ass up. I like Mbilli – tough guy, comes to bring the pain. It’s going to be a hell of a fight. But Canelo going to catch and shoot on his ass all night long.”
The term catch and shoot refers to Alvarez’s ability to block incoming punches and immediately respond with heavy counters. Mbilli’s tendency to attack directly forward provides Alvarez with clear openings to land crisp combinations throughout the contest.
Bradley expects this tactical advantage to produce a dominant display from the former champion. “Uppercuts, hooks … it’s going to be bad. [Canelo’s] going to look like he’s back [to his best].”
The upcoming clash holds major consequences for the super-middleweight division. Victory would re-establish Alvarez near the top of the weight class following his decision defeat to Crawford. For the 31-year-old Mbilli, defending his world title against a legend of the sport is the sternest examination of his professional career. If Mbilli cannot adapt his direct approach, Alvarez’s timing and accuracy could make for a long night in Riyadh.
