Canelo Alvarez has revealed he expects to compete in only three or four more fights before retiring from professional boxing. The Mexican superstar confirmed his decision while preparing for his upcoming bout against WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani on his YouTube channel, the four-division world champion explained that financial reward is no longer his primary motivation.
“I don’t do it because I get big paydays; it’s because I really still enjoy boxing. But there’s nothing out there for me to prove. I’ve accomplished pretty much everything in boxing. There’s maybe three or four more fights left for me,” said Alvarez.
At 36, Alvarez has established one of the most accomplished careers in modern boxing. He continues to train and compete purely out of passion for the sport.
The former undisputed super middleweight champion delayed his training camp to settle family matters, pushing his fight with Mbilli to 31 October. That scheduled clash will mark the beginning of his final stretch. Alvarez has captured world titles across four weight divisions, including winning a belt at light-heavyweight before returning to 168 pounds.
Alvarez indicated that he still enjoys the physical demands of daily training despite having achieved his long-term goals. Having held belts from light-middleweight to light-heavyweight, his legacy in the sport is already secured. The upcoming meeting with Mbilli on 31 October was rescheduled after Alvarez chose to resolve personal matters before launching into full preparation.
Facing Mbilli presents a direct test against a recognized titleholder at super middleweight. Each remaining appearance will carry added significance as the veteran champion moves closer to the end of his career. While Alvarez maintains he has no immediate plans to walk away today, every future contest brings him closer to his final ring entrance.
