Former champion Carl Froch has questioned Conor Benn’s world-level credentials ahead of his announced WBC welterweight title fight against Ryan Garcia. Froch believes Garcia is a “world-class” opponent and a massive step up, making Benn a significant 70/30 underdog for the September 12 bout in Las Vegas.
Benn is set to return to the 147lb division for the first time in over four years to face Garcia. Despite Benn’s recent points victory over Regis Prograis, Froch remains unconvinced about his position among boxing’s top names. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the four-time world champion expressed his doubts about Benn’s resume. “I am sceptical that he [Benn] even belongs at world level and I sincerely hope that he can do something at world level because he is an exciting talent. He is someone that I watch, he is very fit, fast, strong but he has not fought anybody, has he?”
Froch pointed to the lack of top-tier opposition on Benn’s record as the primary reason for his skepticism. He suggests that Benn’s most significant nights have not yet proven he can compete with a reigning world champion like Garcia. “His biggest win, and loss, was Chris Eubank Jr. and that is it really, [maybe] the Chris Algieri stoppage but Algieri was past his best. So, there is question marks around whether or not Conor Benn belongs in the ring with somebody like Ryan Garcia.”
Despite his reservations, Froch acknowledged the fight’s appeal, framing it as the definitive test of Benn’s career. The contest will determine if the British fighter can validate his status as a legitimate world title contender. “I don’t get excited about many fights but this one is exciting because you get to find out where Conor Benn belongs and does he belong at world level? Ryan Garcia, would you say that he is an elite level world champion? Obviously he has been down, he has been beat, but you have got to say that he is world-class.”
Ultimately, Froch sides with the champion, viewing the challenge as too difficult for Benn at this stage. He concluded with a firm prediction, positioning Benn as the clear underdog. “He is a WBC world champion, so this is a massive step up for Conor Benn. I’m not sure that it is a fight that he will win, he probably can win it, if he gets the tactics right, but it is a really, really tough ask. He is the underdog, I think that he is probably 70/30 against.”
