Carlos Monzon retired as the undisputed middleweight champion in 1977, concluding a dominant seven-year reign at the top of the sport. His final victory, a 15-round decision over Rodrigo Valdez, was his 12th successful title defence and cemented his status.
Inside the ring, Monzon was a formidable champion. He combined long limbs, immense physical strength, and a high boxing IQ to control opponents and systematically break them down. During his championship tenure, he defeated a series of elite fighters, including Nino Benvenuti, Emile Griffith, Bennie Briscoe, and Jose Napoles, none of whom could solve the puzzle he presented. He was never stopped in 100 professional fights, finishing with a record of 87 wins, three losses, and nine draws. His three defeats all came early in his career and were later avenged.
His self-belief was as formidable as his fighting style. He is often ranked by historians as the greatest middleweight of all time, an argument supported by his long, undefeated championship run against top-tier opposition. For his part, Monzon said that “no man could ever have beaten him when he was at his best.” Based on the evidence from his career, it is a difficult claim to dispute. He had no apparent weaknesses between the ropes.
However, Monzon’s life outside the ring was a stark and violent contrast to his professional discipline. After his retirement, his behaviour led to a tragic conclusion. Monzon was convicted of killing his wife and sentenced to prison. In 1995, while on a weekend furlough, he was killed in a car crash at the age of 52, bringing a dark end to a life defined by both immense sporting achievement and profound personal failure.
