Carlos Zárate defeated Alfonso Zamora by fourth-round technical knockout on April 23, 1977, in a legendary clash of undefeated champions. The fight, known as “The Battle of the Z Boys,” settled the debate over Mexico’s bantamweight king and defined both fighters’ careers.
The contest at the Forum in Inglewood, California, carried enormous anticipation. Zárate, the WBC champion, arrived with a 45-0 record, including 44 knockouts. WBA titleholder Zamora was a perfect 29-0 with 29 knockouts. Despite their championship status, the bout was a scheduled 10-round non-title affair, a technicality that did little to reduce the stakes. The rivalry was personal, stemming from a business dispute that split their shared training camp under Arturo Hernández, fueling animosity between the two sides.
Zamora began the fight aggressively, pressuring the taller Zárate and winning the opening round with heavy hooks. But the momentum shifted in the second. Zárate established his range with a stiff jab and began landing sharp combinations that visibly shook his opponent. He took control in the third round, using crisp counter-punches to punish Zamora’s wide attacks. A knockdown near the end of the round left Zamora badly hurt as he returned to his corner.
The end came quickly in the fourth. Zárate dropped Zamora early with a series of left hooks. Shortly after the restart, another attack sent Zamora down again. His father, Alfonso Zamora Sr., threw in the towel to stop the contest. The victory solidified Zárate’s place as one of the sport’s all-time great bantamweights, leading to further title defenses and an eventual Hall of Fame induction. For Zamora, the loss was a turning point. He lost his WBA title in his next bout and his career never recovered, ending with four wins in his final eight fights.
