Claressa Shields will drop approximately 20 pounds to challenge Kaye Scott for the unified WBC and WBA middleweight titles on August 15. The undisputed heavyweight champion is confident her power will remain, while Scott views the significant weight cut as a potential strategic advantage.
The fight, scheduled for State Farm Arena in Atlanta, marks Shields’ return to the 160-pound division. Shields stated that Scott’s willingness to accept the challenge was the primary motivation for her to move back down in weight. She addressed Scott directly, saying: “I want to thank Kaye for taking this fight, but because of you I have to lose 20 pounds,”
Despite the significant weight loss required, Shields pointed to her previous success in the division as a foundation for her confidence. She believes her physical development in recent years will offset any potential drawbacks. “I was undisputed twice at 160, and I wasn’t my strongest, but over the years I’ve gotten stronger,” Shields explained.
Conversely, Scott, who campaigns naturally at middleweight, believes the physiological stress of the weight cut will benefit her, particularly in the later rounds. She explained her reasoning, based on past experience. “I’ve done some heavy weight cuts in the amateurs, and it can be draining on the body. I sit comfortably at middleweight. I’m hoping in the later stages of the fight that my endurance will come through.”
Shields dismissed these concerns, arguing that her technical proficiency is the ultimate deciding factor, capable of overriding any physical fatigue or weakness. “I could be tired and have skill. I can be weak and have skill. People think that it’s all about strength. But I just know how to win,” she stated.
The contest carries historical weight, as Shields is attempting to become only the second heavyweight champion in over a century to win a recognized world title after moving down. The event is also the first major boxing card at the venue to be headlined by two women. Success for Shields would reaffirm her technical supremacy across multiple weight classes, while a victory for Scott would validate her strategy of exploiting the challenger’s demanding weight reduction.
