Smith acknowledged the setback but confirmed he is fully prepared to return. “I’m delighted the fight is finally back on and that we’ll be defending my WBC world title on October 24 in Sheffield,” he stated. Smith explained that while the injury was poorly timed, he followed medical advice to ensure a complete recovery and is now back in training.
For Smith, this defense is the first step toward a larger objective. Winning the belt was a lifelong goal, but it was not the final one. “Becoming World Champion was something I’d dreamed about my whole life, but winning the belt was never the end goal. I want to build a legacy, and that starts with defending the title against the best challengers in the division,” Smith said.
His opponent, Alberto Puello, represents a legitimate threat to that legacy. The former champion is the division’s mandatory challenger, having previously defeated Gary Antuanne Russell and Sandor Martín before losing his title to Subriel Matías. He enters this fight after a fourth-round stoppage victory on July 18, ensuring he is active and sharp.
Puello is not traveling to the UK simply to compete. He has clear intentions to reclaim the championship and add to his own history. “I’m excited to be fighting for my title again.
