Da’Mazion Vanhouter knocked Raphael Akpejiori unconscious in the first round of their heavyweight fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday. Vanhouter overcame a six-inch height disadvantage to secure his fourth consecutive opening-round stoppage on the Garcia-Benn undercard.
The scheduled eight-round contest ended almost as quickly as it began. Vanhouter ignored the height deficit, closed the distance effectively, and landed a crushing right hand that sent Akpejiori backward toward the corner. The 6-foot-8 Nigerian fell heavily, leaving the referee with no need to administer a count. Akpejiori owned advantages in height, reach, and professional experience, but none helped once Vanhouter found his target. His long arms offered no defensive barrier, and his punch resistance failed him for the third time in four fights.
Vanhouter has now secured five consecutive stoppage victories. The 21-year-old prospect needed only 66 seconds to remove Raphael Murphy in May, and Akpejiori proved no more difficult despite carrying far greater size.
Promoter Zuffa Boxing has promoted the 21-year-old as “America’s best young heavyweight,” and this fight provided the violent finish selected to support that label. Yet, his physical development remains the more unusual part of his story. Vanhouter began his professional career competing at 154 pounds in 2022. He now carries more than 230 pounds on his 6-foot-2 frame. That transformation has produced serious heavyweight power without making him look slow against carefully selected opposition.
Still, knocking out Akpejiori does not establish Vanhouter as the leading American prospect. Stephan Shaw stopped the same opponent in the opening round in April 2025, while Mourad Aliev defeated him by decision in May. Akpejiori brought an imposing physique and a strong knockout record, but recent results had already exposed his limitations. The next test for Vanhouter must last long enough to reveal more about his capabilities. Zuffa knows Vanhouter can destroy a vulnerable target, but it still needs to learn how he reacts when a durable heavyweight survives his opening attack and forces him to work.
