Heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma faces the wrong stylistic match in Daniel Dubois at this point in his career, according to former world champion Duke McKenzie. Itauma must first overcome Filip Hrgovic on 29 August before targeting the division’s established elite.
McKenzie highlighted the difference in elite experience between the two British heavyweights. Dubois secured an eight-round stoppage victory over Hrgovic in 2024, absorbing early pressure before asserting control. In contrast, 21-year-old Itauma has progressed quickly through early knockouts without facing sustained resistance across long rounds.
Speaking on talkSPORT, McKenzie voiced concerns over Itauma jumping into a bout against Dubois too quickly. He stated: “Dubois is all wrong for Mo. Just my opinion. He’s all wrong for Moses Itauma right now,”
The main question surrounding Itauma remains his ability to make tactical adjustments when an opponent withstands his opening salvo. Hrgovic represents a significant step up in quality at The O2 in London, with the vacant IBF heavyweight title on the line.
McKenzie argued that Dubois possesses the ideal physical attributes and form to expose Itauma’s lack of extended ring time. He remarked: “Dubois is where he needs to be confidence-wise, fitness-wise, power-wise because he’s been there and he’s done a number on some of the other top heavyweights in that division.”
Itauma has dominated his early professional career with explosive stoppage wins. However, McKenzie believes that explosive power has prevented the young contender from developing essential tactical flexibility inside the ring. He stated: “He hasn’t had to adapt. He’s had everything his own way. He’s hit guys on the chin and they’ve gone over,”
The upcoming contest against Hrgovic will offer a clear indicator of Itauma’s readiness for world level. Should he capture the vacant IBF belt, calls for a domestic blockbuster against Dubois will grow louder. Yet McKenzie maintains that rushing into a meeting with Dubois carries significant danger. Summarising his view on the potential matchup, McKenzie added: “I think stylistically he’s all wrong for Moses Itauma.”
A victory on 29 August would solidify Itauma’s position among the top heavyweights. Until he proves he can handle adversity, the former world champion advises caution.
