Danny Garcia has weighed in on a potential Jaron Ennis vs. Terence Crawford superfight, calling it a classic “young hungry lion vs the master” matchup. However, the former champion doubts Crawford would actually come out of retirement to face the newly-crowned titlist.
The discussion reignited after Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis became a two-weight world champion on Saturday. Ennis defeated Xander Zayas to claim the WBA and WBO super-welterweight belts in an entertaining brawl. Despite scoring several knockdowns, Ennis had to overcome difficult moments to extend his unbeaten record to a perfect 36-0 with 32 knockouts.
Victory immediately brought up the one name that has followed Ennis for years: Terence Crawford. Crawford, a five-weight world champion, became undisputed at 147lbs but moved up in weight instead of facing his mandatory challenger in Ennis. Though Crawford retired last year, the fantasy matchup is once again a major topic among boxing fans.
But Garcia, a respected two-division champion himself, is not convinced Crawford will step back through the ropes. He shot down the idea of a return for the legendary fighter. When asked if Crawford would come back, Garcia was direct.
“I don’t know. I doubt it. Crawford’s Crawford.”
Still, the Philadelphia fighter admitted the prospect of the bout is an exciting one. He perfectly summarized the appeal of the potential clash, pitting the new force against the established legend.
“That’s a great fight. Young hungry lion vs the master. The OG master.”
For now, the superfight remains a fantasy. Ennis will likely focus on more realistic targets. His immediate future could involve unifying the remaining belts at 154lbs or facing fellow unbeaten star Vergil Ortiz in another high-stakes showdown.
