Errol Spence Jr. states his extended break from boxing has provided a crucial recovery period for his body ahead of his July 25 fight against Tim Tszyu. The former champion has not competed since his 2023 loss to Terence Crawford.
The 36-year-oldโs career has been interrupted by significant physical setbacks, including a high-speed car crash in 2019 and a detached retina in 2021. Spence admitted he had not given himself adequate time to recuperate from the accumulated damage until this recent hiatus. “I didnโt really rest my body after all the little injuries or accidents that I had, I didnโt rest my body. This was the first time I got to rest my body for about three years, so it was good. I enjoyed it a lot.”
His preparation for the 158-pound catchweight contest involves a new team, having parted with longtime trainer Derrick James for veteran coach Ronnie Shields. Spence said the change has brought a renewed focus on fundamental skills. “Just training to the best of my ability. Training, focusing on listening to my coach and just getting back down to the basics and what got me here,” he told the media.
This new partnership with Shields appears to be progressing well. Spence noted that the work in the gym has been productive, concentrating on technical adjustments that could prove important against an aggressive opponent like Tszyu. “The chemistryโs been good. Just been working on different stuff like hand placement, same olโ stuff, using the jab, combination, stepping off. So, the chemistryโs been great. I like him a lot, and it shows why heโs a great trainer, legendary.”
Whether this period of rest and technical refinement can restore Spence to the level he occupied before the Crawford fight is the primary question surrounding his return. A victory in Australia would re-establish him as a top contender, but a second consecutive defeat would raise serious doubts about his future at the elite level of the sport.
