Evander Holyfield has asserted that he is a greater boxer than Muhammad Ali, citing his unique status as a four-time heavyweight champion. The former undisputed cruiserweight and heavyweight champion believes his record, which surpasses Ali’s three reigns, has been unfairly overlooked by history.
Holyfield’s argument is rooted in a direct statistical comparison. He made his case by stating, “I’m better than Ali”. The American boxer built upon this claim by highlighting the numerical superiority of his title reigns. “I’m the only four-time heavyweight champion of the world but they are still talking about Ali when I broke his record. I’ve been the only four-time heavyweight champion of the world for 24 years,” he said. Holyfield’s resume, which includes victories over Mike Tyson, George Foreman, and Larry Holmes, is bolstered by the unique distinction of having been the undisputed champion in two separate weight classes. He expressed frustration that this achievement, and his heavyweight record, are not central to discussions of boxing’s greatest fighters. He explained: “You can’t talk about it until you break someone’s record, they don’t say nothing about me. How do you cut somebody out of history? Now I didn’t even know I was the first person to be undisputed in two weight divisions, until Usyk did it.”
By publicly challenging the established narrative, Holyfield seeks to reframe the debate around legacy in the heavyweight division.
