Filip Hrgovic believes heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma has been handed opportunities he never received. Ahead of their August 29 fight, the Croatian contender claims Itauma’s rise lacks the sacrifice he endured, questioning if the young fighter is truly tested.
The two heavyweights met this week to promote their upcoming bout at The O2 in London, where Hrgovic immediately established a narrative of earned experience versus manufactured hype. He argued that the 21-year-old Itauma has enjoyed a far smoother path than the one he navigated. Hrgovic pointed to the promotional backing and support system that have accelerated the unbeaten prospect’s career.
“I see it it’s like he went from winning youth world championship, which I won as well, and in like 10, 14 fights he becoming like a superstar,” said Hrgovic. “I feel like he’s got all on the table. He didn’t sacrifice a lot for where he is now. I think my path was much harder, much, much harder. I worked so hard to get into this position, and I feel like everything he achieved was given.”
Hrgovic built his foundation in the amateur ranks, winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics before turning professional. In contrast, Itauma entered the paid ranks as a teenager and has quickly compiled a 14-0 record with 12 knockouts. His most recent victory, a fifth-round stoppage of Jermaine Franklin, was a significant statement, as Franklin had previously taken both Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte the distance. Still, Hrgovic insists key questions about Itauma remain unanswered.
“We never see him in trouble. We never see him get punched, get dropped,” Hrgovic stated. “To be a great fighter, you must have heart, chin, endurance, and we didn’t see that yet.” The Croatian veteran plans to be the first to truly examine the young fighter’s resolve. “Maybe he’s a real deal, maybe he’s not. We’ll see. I definitely think I will test that. I will test is he a real deal or not.”
Itauma offered a direct response to the idea that his success was unearned. “He’s what is it 14 years older than me, and we’re still in the same position,” he said.
The fight on August 29 will provide a clear answer. A victory for Itauma would validate his rapid ascent and position him for a title shot. For Hrgovic, a win would reassert his own championship credentials and prove that a difficult road builds a more durable fighter.
