Floyd Schofield Jr. has dismissed William Zepeda’s newly won WBC lightweight title, claiming the Mexican pressure fighter has not actually improved. Schofield is targeting a massive world title unification bout against Zepeda after handling his own upcoming fight in October.
Zepeda captured the green belt with a relentless win over Lamont Roach Jr. on Saturday night. But Schofield was completely unimpressed by what he saw. Speaking to MillCity Boxing, Schofield pointed out minor tweaks but insisted the champ remains predictable. Schofield said: ““I think yesterday we seen a little more head slips from him, kind of bouncing on his toes,”” He added: ““But if we think about it, he pretty much looks the same, just come forward, and that works for him. That’s what works. If that’s what works for you, hey, keep doing it because he got the world title doing it.””
Schofield flatly rejected the idea that Zepeda took a giant leap forward. He thinks Zepeda is playing with fire against real knockout artists.
When asked if Zepeda made major strides in the ring, Schofield ripped into his aggressive style. He said: ““Hell no. It’s just still a basic style. He just comes forward and throws a lot of punches. I just don’t think it was that major of an improvement because a fighter with power, like Tank, myself, anybody who has that one-punch power, they’re going to capitalize on all those shots being thrown.””
Now Schofield wants his shot at the newly crowned champ to prove it. First, Schofield must handle business in October against Lucas Bahdi for the vacant WBA lightweight strap, following an August 11 purse bid. Win that belt, and a massive unification clash with Zepeda is locked in his sights. Schofield said: ““I’m trying to get this fight on. First I got to handle what I got to handle in October. Then after that, that should be an easy fight to make.”” If both champions deliver, the lightweight division is heading for an explosive showdown.
