Haney gains very little by giving up his title prematurely.
The situation also puts Stevenson in an awkward position. While he has publicly stated he would welcome a Haney-Davis bout, a victory for Davis would likely remove a key future opponent from the board. Stevenson has a close relationship with Davis, referring to him as his ‘brother’, which makes a professional bout between them highly improbable. For Stevenson, a Haney victory is the far more desirable outcome, as it keeps their potential high-stakes championship fight a possibility.
Should Haney vacate, his path to securing the Stevenson fight remains uncertain. Other potential high-profile opponents for Stevenson are currently occupied. Ryan Garcia is scheduled to face Conor Benn, and Benn has already indicated he would not accept terms that favour Stevenson. This lack of available top-tier opponents underscores the leverage Haney currently holds. By defending his title against Davis, Haney keeps all his options open and forces Stevenson to wait, strengthening his own negotiating position for what could be one of the biggest fights in the sport.
