Jeff Horn won the WBO welterweight title nine years ago, defeating Manny Pacquiao by a controversial unanimous decision in Brisbane. Despite Horn’s aggression persuading the judges, punch statistics and media opinion overwhelmingly favoured the Filipino icon, cementing the bout’s disputed legacy.
The “Battle of Brisbane” on July 2, 2017, was a classic clash of styles. Fighting in front of over 51,000 home fans at Suncorp Stadium, Horn employed a strategy of relentless physical pressure. He crowded the eight-division champion, leaning on him in clinches and attacking the body to disrupt Pacquiao’s rhythm. This aggressive approach, which resulted in several head clashes and cuts to Pacquiao, was designed to negate the challenger’s technical disadvantage.
Pacquiao, however, adjusted after a difficult opening round. His superior accuracy and hand speed began to tell through the middle stages of the fight. The champion consistently landed cleaner punches, particularly his straight left hand, and opened a cut over Horn’s eye. The fight’s most dramatic moments came in the ninth round. Pacquiao landed a sustained barrage of punches that left Horn badly hurt and staggering across the ring. Referee Mark Nelson went to Horn’s corner before the tenth, warning that he was close to stopping the contest.
Horn survived the assault and saw out the final rounds, continuing to press forward until the final bell. The judges rewarded his persistence. Waleska Roldan scored the bout 117-111, while two others had it 115-113, all for the Australian challenger. The verdict caused an immediate backlash. A contracted rematch never took place. The victory remains the high point of Horn’s career; he would lose the title to Terence Crawford in 2018. Pacquiao silenced any retirement talk by defeating Keith Thurman for another world title two years later, proving his elite-level career was not over.
