Josh Kelly retained his IBF junior middleweight title following a grueling 12-round decision victory over Caoimhin Agyarko. Despite suffering severe cuts and swelling, Kelly immediately targeted WBA and WBO champion Jaron Ennis for a major unification clash later this year.
The contest developed into a physical encounter that saw both fighters absorb heavy punishment over 12 rounds. Agyarko connected with clean power shots throughout, while Kelly contended with facial cuts and visible swelling. The physical nature of the bout extended to rough inside work, leading to Kelly receiving a point deduction for punches behind the head. Kelly expressed frustration with the refereeing after the fight, comparing periods of the contest to mixed martial arts.
Despite the damage sustained, the British champion expressed immediate interest in facing Jaron Ennis in a unification bout. Speaking after the fight, Kelly said: “I want it next. People will be smiling looking at that saying: ‘What’s he talking about?’ That’s a tricky night for anyone. I want the big names in the division. I’ve already taken out one name in Bakhram Murtazaliev. Let me get the other ones. I’m here, man. I’m a champion,” He later added on social media that he planned to “rest up, heal up and look to get a big one next.”
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has backed the proposed matchup, targeting a potential event in the United States. However, Kelly must first complete a recovery period before committing to an intensive training camp.
Ennis holds both the WBA and WBO titles at 154 pounds, representing one of the most significant opportunities in the light-middleweight division. While Kelly has proven his credentials by overcoming Bakhram Murtazaliev and Agyarko, the time required to heal from his latest defense will determine how quickly negotiation turns into fight preparation.
