Former WBA featherweight champion Mauricio Lara will face Carlos Ornelas in a 10-round super featherweight main event on August 29 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Lara seeks his fifth consecutive stoppage win as Matchroom continues rebuilding the 28-year-old Mexican following his title loss.
Lara transformed his standing in 2023 when he travelled to England and knocked out Leigh Wood to win the WBA featherweight crown. That victory showcased his knockout authority and aggressive pressure. However, his title reign proved short-lived during the immediate rematch three months later. Lara failed to make the featherweight limit, surrendering his belt on the scales before turning in a flat performance in a unanimous decision defeat. A subsequent majority draw against Daniel Lugo, a regional opponent, further complicated his status at world level.
To rebuild his form, Matchroom moved Lara up to the 130-pound super featherweight division. The promotional team has since matched him against four consecutive opponents: Pedro Alejandro Delgado, Edwing Zaid Davila Chavez, Miguel Roman, and Rafael Rosas Ramirez. Lara stopped all four inside the distance, restoring his offensive rhythm and finishing ability. Still, those contests offered limited tactical resistance, serving primarily to rebuild confidence rather than test his defensive durability or endurance.
At 28, Lara remains in his physical prime with genuine single-punch knockout power.
The upcoming 10-round bout against Carlos Ornelas on August 29 follows a similar matchmaking strategy. Scheduled as a main event in Guadalajara and broadcast worldwide, the contest gives Lara another platform to extend his winning run. Yet another victory against lower-tier opposition will do little to prove his standing against top 130-pound contenders. The super featherweight division features capable champions and skilled technicians. Matchroom must eventually step up the opposition to determine whether Lara can re-establish himself among the division’s elite fighters.
