Irish welterweight contender Paddy Donovan prepares to face Belfast veteran Tyrone McKenna in a ten-round bout at Croke Park in Dublin. Donovan, the IBF mandatory challenger, must secure a win to maintain his shot at world champion Liam Paro.
Donovan enters the Dublin contest following a majority decision victory over Karen Chukhadzhian in Germany, a result that secured his mandatory status. Reflecting on his progress and looking ahead to the fight, Donovan stated: “Beating Karen Chukhadzhian in Germany was probably the biggest win of my career. He’s the most avoided welterweight on the planet. To go there, do a hard 12 rounds, score two big knockdowns, and win the fight comfortably was great. It puts me in a great position to fight for a world title, but we have a pit stop, and the pit stop is Tyrone McKenna,”
While Donovan views the German win as a comfortable success, his performance exposed potential vulnerabilities. He built an early lead but faded down the stretch, allowing Chukhadzhian to sweep the closing rounds and narrow the official scorecards. A second credited knockdown appeared close to a push. Without that score, the fight would have ended in a majority draw, leaving Donovan’s endurance under scrutiny as he prepares for another demanding contest.
McKenna offers a completely different challenge. The 36-year-old Belfast fighter excels at smothering opponents and forcing prolonged exchanges on the inside.

His initial meeting with Lewis Crocker ended in a disqualification following point deductions for using his head and elbow. McKenna thrives in rough bouts and will look to provoke a similar reaction to disrupt the contender’s focus.
The risks at Croke Park rest heavily on Donovan. Performing before 80,000 fans on Katie Taylor’s farewell bill, he receives little professional credit for defeating an aging opponent.
