WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza is set to defend his title against mandatory challenger Lorenzo Parra on the Canelo Alvarez versus Christian Mbilli undercard in October. The proposed bout marks Espinoza’s first ring appearance in nearly twelve months.
According to a report from ESPN KnockOut, the fight is currently being planned for the major autumn event. Parra earned his opportunity through the mandatory route after rising to the top position in the WBO featherweight rankings. The 32-year-old Venezuelan secured his status in February by stopping Elijah Pierce in the second round to capture the WBO International featherweight title. Holding a professional record of 24 wins, one loss, and one draw, with 18 knockouts, Parra will be competing for a world title for the first time in his career.
Espinoza faces a test of his ring sharpness after a prolonged period away from competition.
The undefeated 28-0 Mexican champion last fought in November, when he secured an 11th-round stoppage against Arnold Khegai. Standing at 6’1″, Espinoza presents unusual height, reach, and power challenges for the 126-pound division. Those physical attributes have discouraged potential challengers, with few top contenders actively pursuing a bout against him.
His stopping power was evident during his rematch with Robeisy Ramirez in December 2024. Espinoza halted the two-time Olympic gold medalist in the sixth round after inflicting a fractured orbital bone to Ramirez’s right eye. The Cuban contender has not returned to the ring since that defeat.
Should the October fight be finalized, Espinoza will aim to consolidate his reign following his year-long absence. For Parra, the mandatory shot represents a major career opportunity on one of boxing’s highest-profile fight cards.
