Raymond Muratalla defends his IBF lightweight title against Robson Conceicao on Saturday in what may be his final fight at 135 pounds. Trainer Robert Garcia confirmed plans to discuss a move to junior welterweight following the bout due to weight cut demands.
Muratalla faces a former Olympic gold medalist who has never been stopped in his professional career. Conceicao brings established durability to the contest, having proven his resilience against top-tier opposition. However, Garcia believes his fighter has the offensive tools required to secure a stoppage victory. Evaluating Muratalla’s chances of finishing the challenger, Garcia said: ““I think he’s got the skills, he’s got the power, he’s got what it takes. So, hopefully he is,”” while acknowledging the toughness of Conceicao, Garcia added: ““Con’s a warrior, man. He’s a warrior. He’s proven it against some of the best fighters in the world that he could compete out there. We’re going to do whatever it takes, but yeah, I think Raymond’s the one that could do it.””
Making the lightweight limit has become an increasingly demanding physical process for Muratalla despite his strict diet and preparation. While the champion looked healthy at Thursday’s final press conference without showing obvious signs of physical distress, his natural size continues to present challenges. The champion is still expected to hold a noticeable size advantage over Conceicao once rehydrated on fight night.
Garcia remains convinced that moving up to the 140-pound junior welterweight class will significantly improve Muratalla’s effectiveness in the ring. Garcia said: ““Cutting to 135 takes a lot out of his body, especially when you’re that big. One day is not enough to recuperate 100%. At 140 we’ll see a way better Raymond than at 135.”” Garcia further emphasised the benefits of stepping up in weight class, stating: ““I think he’ll be much better. He’ll be much stronger,”” with the team set to hold final discussions regarding the move immediately after Saturday’s defense.
Moving up to 140 pounds also alters the strategic options for high-profile future contests, including potential bouts against elite opponents across nearby weight classes. Garcia disclosed that Shakur Stevenson had previously named Muratalla as a desired opponent. However, the trainer maintains that any future encounter between the two fighters belongs at light welterweight rather than lightweight, where Muratalla can perform without the physical tax of a severe weight cut.
