Boxer Richardson Hitchins has signed with Zuffa Boxing after leaving Matchroom, citing a lucrative financial offer and a strategic vision for his career. A key factor was Zuffa’s promise to build his profile in his home market of New York, a long-held ambition for the fighter.
Hitchins confirmed he was a sought-after free agent, fielding interest from several major organisations before committing to the new venture led by Dana White and Nick Khan. “I had deals from different people. I had deals from DAZN, the network itself. Golden Boy, we spoke to. Top Rank was reaching out. I also was in talks about signing back with Eddie, but it didn’t get to happen,” he stated. Ultimately, Zuffa’s package of financial terms and long-term strategy proved decisive.
During discussions, Hitchins was clear about his previous frustrations. “Being in a meeting with Dana White and Nick Khan, I was vocal and transparent about how I never really got promoted the way I wanted to get promoted,” Hitchins explained. He pointed to the careers of other regional fighters who benefited from a consistent local presence. “You see a lot of fighters like Shakur Stevenson when they were coming up, they’d be fighting a lot on the East Coast. Boots Ennis is always on the East Coast, Philly, Atlantic City.”
This desire for a hometown footing was central to his decision. Hitchins felt his career had been nomadic, preventing him from establishing a strong local fanbase. “I felt like when I was with different promoters, they had me all around the United States, but never really home, around the tri-state area to build my name. Zuffa gave me their word to help me build my name, especially around my home area and eventually around the world.”
Now, Hitchins prepares for a new chapter. He will make his Zuffa Boxing debut on July 26 against Ricardo Salas at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York. The fight marks his first contest in the welterweight division, having vacated the IBF light welterweight title. The bout provides an immediate opportunity for Hitchins and his new promoters to begin delivering on their shared vision.
