Trainer Robert Garcia has accused Jaron Ennis of avoiding a light-middleweight bout against Vergil Ortiz Jr in favour of world title unifications. Garcia claimed Ennis is targeting Josh Kelly instead, despite Ortiz being prepared to fight in November.
Ennis has focused his career at junior middleweight on gathering championships to become the undisputed ruler of the 154-pound division. While Ortiz presents a high-profile name and a stern test, he currently holds no world title. That lack of silverware remains the primary structural barrier to securing a contest with Ennis, who prioritises belt holders over non-title contenders.
Ortiz suffered a prolonged setback when a promotional dispute sidelined him, allowing Ennis to remain active and advance his position. Now active once again, Ortiz requires a high-level opponent to regain the standing he lost during his absence. Speaking on the Mr. Versace Podcast, Garcia urged Ennis to alter his plans and accept a fight in the final quarter of the year.
Garcia said: “We’re available November. Let’s do it. If you beat Vergil, then go after the unifications and undisputed. In the meantime, show the world that you are better than Vergil. He won’t do it. They’re going after Kelly,”
The public challenge functions as a campaign to build fan support and pressure Ennis into taking a bout that offers minimal championship incentive. Facing Kelly offers Ennis direct progress toward total division control with another world title on the line, whereas defeating Ortiz provides no belt.
Inside the ring, Ortiz possesses the style to create a demanding contest. His high-volume pressure, body punching, and willingness to trade inside would offer a strict physical test, probing defensive openings previously seen against Xander Zayas. Garcia maintains that Ortiz has the finishing ability to stop Ennis if he lands cleanly.
However, perceived danger does not determine fight scheduling at the top level. Ortiz must secure a world title at 154 pounds or earn a mandatory position to compel Ennis to negotiate. Without that mandatory leverage, Ennis has no obligation to pause his four-belt campaign for a dangerous voluntary defence. Moving up to middleweight would permanently end hopes of the match taking place.
