Raymond Muratalla is stepping up to the 140-pound light welterweight division following his IBF lightweight title victory. His trainer, Robert Garcia, has targeted high-profile opponents to secure an immediate world title shot, bypassing lower-ranked contenders in the weight class.
Garcia clarified the team’s ambitions after promoter Top Rank surveyed supporters regarding Muratalla’s next opponent. Rather than making a defense of his newly acquired 135-pound belt or taking an exploratory tune-up bout at 140 pounds, the trainer called out major figures across the division.
Posting on social media, Garcia stated: “Anyone at 140! Frank Martin’s with Top Rank now, heard Keyshawn needs a fight now, or anyone ranked high at 140 that will get us a title shot. Line them up,”
The chosen names demonstrate a calculated effort to gain immediate exposure. Frank Martin recently joined Top Rank, providing an accessible pathway to an all-promotional bout at light welterweight. Keyshawn Davis also offers high name recognition, though his trajectory complicates matters.
A potential contest with Davis contains obvious obstacles. Davis pulled out of an ordered WBO welterweight title bout against Devin Haney and has consistently aimed at 147 pounds. If Davis stays at welterweight, Muratalla would need to bypass 140 pounds completely to accommodate the matchup.
Sanctioning body protocols will decide how quickly Muratalla progresses. The WBO previously positioned Davis near the top of its welterweight standings before he fought in that class. However, it remains uncertain if sanctioning bodies will extend similar treatment to Muratalla as an incoming lightweight champion.
If an immediate high ranking is not granted, Garcia’s route is straightforward. Wins over contenders such as Martin would strengthen Muratalla’s position and increase his standing at 140 pounds. Frequent activity will give governing bodies clear reason to enforce mandatory title opportunities. Garcia’s approach makes one point clear: Muratalla will not be eased into his new weight class.
