Roy Jones Jr: Xander Zayas was ‘mentally broken’ in Ennis defeat

Boxing great Roy Jones Jr. believes Xander Zayas has the talent to become a world champion again but must first recover psychologically from his first professional loss to Jaron Ennis.

Roy Jones Jr. has stated Xander Zayas’s first professional defeat was a result of being “mentally broken,” not physically outmatched. Following the loss to Jaron Ennis, Jones insists the 23-year-old has the skills but must first rebuild his confidence to contend again.

The former four-division world champion believes the damage from the stoppage was primarily psychological. He argued that for Zayas to return to the top of the junior middleweight division, his first step must be to address his mindset. Jones was direct in his assessment of the immediate priority for the young fighter. “He got to go back and get a sports psychiatrist first to put that back in his mind, because once that’s broken, that has to be fixed.”

According to Jones, Zayas possesses all the necessary physical attributes to reclaim his status as an elite boxer. The issue, he suggested, was a collapse in self-belief at a critical moment. He is confident that Zayas can recover completely if the mental aspect of his preparation is properly managed. “If it gets fixed psychologically, he can come back and be world champ again because he has the tools. He has the skills,” Jones said.

Zayas entered the bout against Ennis as an undefeated unified champion, and the loss has created debate over his future. Jones maintains that the setback was a matter of composure rather than a gap in ability. “He was one punch away from it that night. He got all the goods. He just got to get that part where he got broken, what some people call quitting. He got to get that fixed psychologically. He got to get rewired again so that’s not there.”

Ultimately, Jones expressed confidence that Zayas has ample time to recover and fulfil his potential. He stressed that the fighter’s youth is a significant advantage in his path back to title contention, provided he seeks the right professional help. “He young. Get him a good sports psychiatrist, get that first and get back in that gym. He’ll be champ again because he that good.”
