Ryan Garcia claims Conor Benn underestimates his ring intelligence ahead of WBC title fight

WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia says Conor Benn fails to recognize his tactical depth ahead of their world title bout in Las Vegas.

Ryan Garcia will defend his WBC welterweight title against Conor Benn at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, 12 September. Garcia claims his challenger underestimates his ring intelligence and technical depth heading into the 147lb championship bout.

Garcia built his career on rapid hand speed and a trademark left hook, but believes his tactical awareness remains overlooked. Speaking on Zuffa Boxing’s Road to Garcia vs. Benn, the champion addressed his opponent’s perception of his skillset. “I don’t think Conor understands how much I actually do love the game of boxing,” Garcia said. He added: “I don’t think he understands how much I actually know about boxing. I think that he just sees me as talented, but he doesn’t know all the levels I go to master the craft. I just don’t think he understands how good I am.”

While Garcia demonstrated patient counter-punching in his 2024 victory over Devin Haney, defensive flaws persist. He often retreats in straight lines toward the ropes, relying on a high guard or clinching rather than pivoting into open space. Benn will attempt to press forward and cut off those avenues, though rushing inside carries clear risk. The challenger was knocked down twice early in his career by Cedrick Peynaud when lunging without adequate setup. Careless entries in the opening rounds could leave Benn open to Garcia’s fastest counters.

One poorly timed charge from Benn could provide the champion with the opening he needs to end the contest.

Targeting the body offers Benn his clearest route to slowing the champion down. Gervonta Davis stopped Garcia with a liver shot in 2023, and Benn frequently targets the midsection when fighting inside. However, Benn must first bridge the gap against a taller, faster opponent. His return to the 147lb limit also introduces endurance questions following two previous fights at a higher weight against Chris Eubank Jr. A knockout win would reaffirm Garcia’s elite punching power, while a disciplined defensive performance would validate his claims of superior boxing intellect.
