Ryan Garcia is publicly questioning the quality of Conor Benn’s professional record ahead of their September 12 world title fight. Garcia argues Benn has only defeated veteran opponents past their prime, setting up a significant test of Benn’s credibility at the elite level.
During the kickoff press conference for the Las Vegas bout, Garcia claimed Benn has not been properly tested against a fighter with his combination of youth and ability. He pointed to Benn’s most notable victories as evidence of a carefully managed career rather than proof of elite standing.
“If I look at his career, he’s only fought guys that are on the way out. He’s never fought a young, hungry, talented fighter. This is actually his first time ever doing it,” Garcia stated. The criticism focuses on opponents like Regis Prograis, who was 37, alongside veterans Chris Algieri, Chris Van Heerden and Adrian Granados, all of whom were considered past their peak years when they fought Benn.
Garcia continued his assessment by suggesting Benn is unprepared for the challenge he represents. “We’re going to see what he has. He’s rushed into this position, so we’re going to show him what happens when you rush into something you’re not ready for. And this is a promise.”
This welterweight title fight presents a unique challenge for Benn. The British contender has not competed at the 147-pound limit since 2022, yet he moves directly into a world championship opportunity without first defeating a currently ranked welterweight. His bout with Garcia will be a measure of his ability to handle a younger, faster opponent.
Benn has not let the criticism go unanswered. He has responded by pointing to Garcia’s own recent record, specifically his decision loss to Rolando Romero last year before he received an opportunity to fight Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title.
