On July 22, 1963, Sonny Liston defended his undisputed heavyweight title by knocking out Floyd Patterson in the first round for a second time. The dominant victory, lasting just 2 minutes and 10 seconds in Las Vegas, cemented Liston’s intimidating reign over the division.
The rematch was definitive, ending four seconds later than their first encounter but with the same result. Patterson attempted to press the action early, landing several combinations, but he could not overcome Liston’s superior size and power. The champion established control with his powerful jab before landing the heavy punches that decided the fight. A ringside vendor’s prediction just before the opening bell, “Last round, folks!,” proved entirely accurate. Liston sent Patterson to the canvas three times with punishing barrages. After the third knockdown, referee Harold Krause stopped the contest as Patterson was unable to continue.
Despite another crushing victory, Liston struggled to win over the crowd, who booed the short duration of the championship fight. Liston acknowledged the public’s sentiment afterward. “The public is not with me. I know it,” he stated. He followed with a challenge to any potential opponent, adding, “But they’ll have to swing along until somebody comes to beat me.” That challenger would arrive seven months later in Cassius Clay, who shocked the world by defeating the seemingly invincible champion.
The fight had lasting consequences for boxing. It was the first heavyweight title bout sanctioned by the newly formed World Boxing Council (WBC) and set a financial record as the first contest where both fighters earned purses exceeding one million dollars. The one-sided nature of the rematch also prompted the World Boxing Association to vote against mandatory return-bout clauses in championship contracts. While neither Liston nor Patterson would regain the heavyweight crown, their two brief fights remain a stark example of one of the most dominant, if short-lived, title reigns in the sport’s history.
