Sugar Ray Robinson secured a critical split-decision victory over Rocky Castellani on July 22, 1955, after surviving a heavy knockdown. The win in Daly City, California, kept his comeback on track and earned him a shot at the middleweight championship.
Robinson entered the bout as an underdog. Following a brief retirement to pursue an entertainment career, his return to boxing had been inconsistent, including a loss to Ralph “Tiger” Jones. Castellani, the division’s No. 1 contender, was favored to win, with oddsmakers believing his strength and pressure would overwhelm the 34-year-old boxing legend. The fight was a crossroads for both men. Robinson needed the win to challenge champion Bobo Olson, while Castellani sought to cement his own title credentials.
The fight began as predicted. Castellani immediately pressed forward, forcing Robinson to box on the back foot. The aggressor landed several hard shots early, briefly buckling Robinson’s legs. The fight’s most dramatic moment came in the sixth round when a left hook and a follow-up right from Castellani sent Robinson to his knees. He took a nine-count before rising to survive the round.
That knockdown was a turning point. Instead of folding, Robinson demonstrated his class over the final four rounds. He shifted his tactics, investing heavily in body shots that slowed Castellani’s advance. This created the space he needed to land crisp, accurate combinations to the head. His superior footwork allowed him to control the distance and steadily build a lead on two of the three scorecards.
Referee Jack Downey and judge Frankie Carter both scored the bout 56-54 for Robinson, while judge Jack Silver favored Castellani 56-54. The split verdict was debated by some observers, but it gave Robinson the opportunity he was chasing. Five months later, he knocked out Bobo Olson in two rounds to begin his third reign as middleweight champion. Castellani remained a top contender but never won a world title.
