Terence Crawford defeated Canelo Alvarez by unanimous decision on 13 September 2025 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to claim the undisputed super-middleweight title. The American successfully jumped two weight classes before retiring from boxing three months later.
Crawford produced his defining career victory by moving up from light-middleweight to super-middleweight at nearly 38 years of age. Despite entering as an underdog against the favoured champion, Crawford weighed in at 167.5lb alongside Alvarez before orchestrating a calculated display. Fighting exclusively from a southpaw stance, Crawford utilised superior footwork and reach to keep Alvarez off balance. A sharp jab proved decisive, outlanding Alvarez 45-16 in that category and setting up straight left hands whenever the Mexican attempted to push inside.
Alvarez found early success targeting the body during competitive opening rounds. However, as the fight progressed and the tempo settled, Crawford took control by changing angles and scoring cleanly. Alvarez grew increasingly reliant on single power punches that were easy to anticipate. Even after referee Thomas Taylor warned Alvarez for a low blow in the sixth round, no points were deducted, and neither fighter suffered a knockdown throughout the 12 rounds.
A clash of heads opened a cut above Crawford’s right eye in the ninth round, but he responded by producing one of his most active rounds of the fight. Alvarez rallied briefly in the 10th, yet Crawford closed out the final six minutes with precise combination punching. Judges Steve Weisfeld scored the contest 116-112, with Tim Cheatham and Max DeLuca both submitting 115-113 scorecards. CompuBox credited Crawford with a total punch advantage of 115-99.
Reflecting on his loss, Alvarez acknowledged his tactical difficulties. “I couldn’t figure out the style,” Alvarez admitted. “Everything he did gave me trouble.”
Alvarez later attributed his fading work rate to leg cramps, incomplete weight recovery, and an elbow injury that required surgery weeks later. Nevertheless, Crawford executed a precise strategy to exploit those physical limitations.
The event set a Nevada record attendance of 70,482 spectators, generating a live gate of $47.23m and attracting over 41m global viewers on Netflix. Victory moved Crawford to 42-0 with 31 knockouts, securing undisputed championships in three separate weight divisions. Having dropped to his knees in tears following the announcement, Crawford retired three months later, leaving the Alvarez victory as the final achievement of his career.
