Tim Tszyu plans to mentally break Errol Spence Jr. in their upcoming bout on July 25. The Australian fighter stated his goal is to apply so much pressure that the former welterweight champion quits, questioning himself from the opening bell.
The former WBO junior middleweight champion has made his intentions clear ahead of the 158-pound catchweight contest in Sydney. Tszyu is not just seeking a victory; he wants to force a stoppage by breaking his opponentโs will. He expressed this directly, stating his ideal scenario. “Ideally, Errol Spence just questions himself from the very get going, you know, and then taps out,” Tszyu said. When asked if the goal was to make Spence quit, his reply was instant: “Yeah, of course. Of course,”
Tszyuโs strategy is built on his physical advantages as a natural 154-pounder. He believes Spence, who has spent his career at welterweight, will struggle with the power and relentless pace he can set. The Australian wants to establish this reality immediately. “I want to make him think, you know what, this isnโt a small Danny Garcia that Iโm fighting against. This is the pure 154-pounder that can hit, that can put on a pace, and I want him to feel that,” said Tszyu.
He also feels he is being overlooked by the American star. This perception is a significant factor in his preparations. “Iโm very motivated, and the fact that heโs underestimating me, I feel like he just thinks this guyโs going to be a walk in the park. But yet when I get in the ring there, I want to shock him,” Tim added.
The fight carries significant weight for both men’s careers. It marks Spence’s first return to the ring since his comprehensive defeat to Terence Crawford and follows a long period of inactivity. For Tszyu, who is coming off two decision wins and is now working with trainer Jeff Fenech, it represents a direct path back toward world title contention. A victory would re-establish his standing, while a second consecutive loss for Spence could signal the end of a decorated career.
