Trainer Andy Lee revealed that Ben Whittaker battled a COVID-19 infection days before his IBF light heavyweight title eliminator against Conor Wallace. Despite the illness, Whittaker defeated Wallace by unanimous decision at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, earning scorecards of 117-111, 116-112, and 115-113.
Whittaker faced late trouble as Wallace surged in the 10th and 12th rounds. While the victory puts Whittaker in position to eventually challenge unified champion Dmitry Bivol, both Lee and promoter Eddie Hearn discussed a potential rematch with Wallace first.
