Vergil Ortiz Jr. is targeted to face former undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo in a middleweight bout planned for November. Negotiations shifted toward Charlo after Ortiz was unable to secure fights against other top-tier division rivals.
Ortiz returned to training three weeks ago following the resolution of a promotional dispute with Golden Boy Promotions. His management team initially explored potential high-profile matchups against Jaron Ennis, Sebastian Fundora, Tim Tszyu, Erislandy Lara, and Xander Zayas. However, when those negotiations failed to materialize, focus shifted to Charlo as the primary option for an autumn return.
Discussing the search for a suitable opponent, Ortiz manager Rick Mirigian explained: “Charlo: Might be only one possible for a solid fight”
Texas and Las Vegas are currently under consideration as candidate venues for the proposed 160-pound contest.
Charlo has not competed since September 2023, when he dropped a one-sided decision to Canelo Alvarez. The 36-year-old has not earned a victory in the ring since stopping Brian Castaño in May 2022. Moving directly into a middleweight contest against a high-volume puncher after prolonged inactivity poses severe tactical challenges.
In his recent win over Serhii Bohachuk, Ortiz demonstrated his characteristic aggressive rhythm, though he was dropped twice in heavy exchanges. Charlo retains a dangerous counter right hand, but his ability to manage physical exchanges after a long layoff remains untested. Returning without a tune-up bout forces Charlo to find his timing against a fighter who denies opponents time to settle.
A win would give Ortiz a major name on his record as he moves into the middleweight division. Yet boxing observers note that defeating Charlo proves less than testing himself against active middleweight contenders such as Cuban puncher Yoenli Hernandez. Golden Boy Promotions is expected to package the fight as a pay-per-view event, marketing Charlo’s championship pedigree to sell the matchup.
