Vergil Ortiz Jr Urged to Target Yoenli Hernandez Following Layoff

Vergil Ortiz Jr is searching for an opponent following a nine-month layoff caused by a legal dispute. Cuban middleweight contender Yoenli Hernandez offers a clear path back to activity.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. is searching for an opponent following a nine-month layoff caused by a legal dispute with Golden Boy Promotions. With rival champions pursuing other unification bouts, Cuban middleweight contender Yoenli Hernandez presents an immediate path back to active competition.

Ortiz holds an undefeated record of 24-0 with 22 knockouts, but has not boxed since stopping Erickson Lubin in two rounds last November. His promotional dispute reached court and kept him sidelined until a settlement was finalised in July. In his absence, the junior middleweight division shifted. Jaron Ennis claimed the WBA and WBO titles by stopping Xander Zayas in June and is targeting full unification against IBF titleholder Josh Kelly and WBC champion Sebastian Fundora.

Ennis acknowledged Ortiz as an alternative option, stating: “If we can’t get those other guys and Vergil Ortiz is available, let’s make it happen,” However, relying on Ennis leaves Ortiz waiting behind existing division plans.

The Texan voiced his frustration regarding matchmaking delays. “We want anyone that’s willing to fight. We’re just having problems getting fights right now. No one wants to fight, if I’m being honest,” Ortiz said. He added: “But what can I do? I can’t force them to sign the contract.”

The delay stems from legal inaction rather than fighters refusing contracts. Remaining idle while champions negotiate unification matches leaves Ortiz isolated at junior middleweight.

Moving up to middleweight expands his options significantly. Cuban contender Yoenli Hernandez provides a dangerous yet viable opponent at 160 pounds. Defeating a top-tier middleweight would maintain Ortiz’s sharpness without forcing him to wait for light middleweight belts to clear. Ortiz confirmed he is prepared to shift divisions, stating: “I’m definitely open to anything for sure. I wouldn’t be opposed to it at all,”

Golden Boy Promotions must secure a credible opponent immediately. Returning to the ring against Hernandez resolves the activity problem and positions Ortiz for major bouts once the championship belts align.
