Mexican lightweight contender William Zepeda faces Lamont Roach Jr. for the vacant WBC lightweight title in Las Vegas this Saturday, aiming to bounce back from his sole career loss to Shakur Stevenson with an upgraded tactical approach.
Zepeda is back in the ring and hunting for his first world title. After taking a full unanimous decision loss against Shakur Stevenson last July, the Mexican pressure-fighter took a much-needed rest and completely retooled his operation. He brought in a specialized nutritionist to tailor his fight week meals and enlisted top-tier sparring partners to sharpen his defense. Zepeda accepts that his old style had clear limitations against elite boxers. He stated: “We knew there were many technical things to improve,” before breaking down the key mental shifts needed to win at championship level. He added: “More than anything, it was controlling my emotions, not getting desperate, knowing how to manage the pace of the fight. Those are very important things. You have to stay calm because one combination can get through if you lose your composure. Those were things I worked on in this camp.”
Mindless volume punching will not work against a slick counterpuncher like Roach. Roach feeds on reckless aggression, waiting for opponents to swing wild so he can unleash sharp counterpunches. Zepeda knows he cannot simply march forward throwing non-stop blows without a backup plan. Instead, he must work upstairs and downstairs, stitching combinations together while refusing to stay in one place. Zepeda explained: “We have to apply intelligent pressure,” emphasizing that raw tempo alone plays straight into Roach’s traps. Giving Roach any opening allows him to take full control of the fight. Staying defensive and disciplined in every exchange will dictate whether Zepeda leaves Vegas with the gold. He added: “We have to avoid leaving gaps and not give him chances to work,” knowing any split-second lapse could cost him the title.
And this Las Vegas main event represents a massive turning point for the Mexican contender. If Zepeda combines his trademark punch volume with smart ring generalship, he claims the vacant WBC belt and restores his status at lightweight.
