William Zepeda claimed the WBC lightweight world title on Saturday night in Las Vegas, defeating Lamont Roach Jr. by unanimous decision. The Mexican pressure fighter outworked Roach over 12 rounds, rebounding from his previous career defeat to Shakur Stevenson.
Zepeda (34-1, 27 KOs) returned following a year-long hiatus after his loss to Stevenson, using the time off to regroup and refine his technical execution. Under trainer Jay Najar, Zepeda demonstrated improved footwork, distance management, and punch selection. The tactical adjustments complemented an intense physical pace, as Zepeda threw 884 total punches across 12 rounds. He landed 218 strikes against Roach (25-2-3, 10 KOs), marking the highest total landed against the American, who previously fought Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz.
Najar noted that the team addressed prior criticism by revamping their preparation framework, which included hiring a chef and nutritionist to enhance stamina. Asked how he sustained the relentless pressure throughout the bout, Zepeda said: “The conditioning, the great preparation, the fortitude, mentally and physically, and having a great game plan.”
The victory marked the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition for the contender. Both fighter and trainer embraced as the scorecards were announced in Las Vegas.
“This is what I always dreamt of, so many nights I had to go to sleep to wake up early and run in the morning,” Zepeda said.
Looking ahead, Zepeda outlined plans to pursue undisputed status at lightweight. A potential match against Raymond Muratalla appears unlikely after Muratalla confirmed a move up to 140 pounds following his unanimous decision win over Robson Conceicao on the undercard. With the WBO lightweight champion watching from ringside, unification options remain available after Zepeda takes time to rest and celebrate with his family.
