Xander Zayas has opted against invoking his contractual rematch clause following his seventh-round stoppage loss to Jaron Ennis on 27 June. The decision leaves Ennis clear to pursue title unification bouts in the junior-middleweight division.
Zayas was granted a 21-day window to enforce a second bout following their initial fight, but the deadline has officially lapsed without activation from his team. Boxing journalist Dan Rafael confirmed on social media that the contractual requirement has expired.
Writing on social media, Rafael reported: “FYI: Xander Zayas has let expire his 21-day window to enforce an immediate rematch with Boots Ennis, who is now free to make some other fight and has no more obligation to a rematch,”
Although Zayas enjoyed moments of early success in their summer encounter, Ennis gradually took complete control of the action before securing a stoppage in round seven. Returning to the ring just one month after a demanding loss offered minimal time to implement the necessary technical changes required against one of boxing’s most complete fighters.
Passing on the option represents a sensible decision for Zayas and his trainers. Rather than rushing into another championship bout, the junior-middleweight contender can focus on gaining valuable ring experience and rebuilding at 154 pounds before targeting high-profile bouts further down the road.
For Ennis, the expiration of the clause removes the final remaining obstacle to his fight plans. He is now unencumbered by any contractual ties to Zayas and can direct his attention toward securing marquee matchups or title unifications at junior middleweight. Ennis aims to collect the remaining belts at 154 pounds on his path to becoming undisputed champion. Further updates regarding his next opponent are expected in the coming weeks, though his next challenger will not be Zayas.
