Oleksandr Gvozdyk has been released by Zuffa Boxing following a seventh-round knockout loss to Radivoje Kalajdzic. The former WBC light heavyweight champion was cut under an early-termination clause after suffering his second defeat in three fights at age 39.
The contract termination ended Gvozdyk’s tenure with the newly established promotion. During the February bout, the Ukrainian veteran performed strongly in the opening stages, dropping Kalajdzic twice and dictating the pace of the contest. Kalajdzic recovered to stop Gvozdyk in the seventh round. Gvozdyk subsequently revealed that his contract contained a specific exit clause allowing Zuffa Boxing to end the agreement after any loss. He received formal notification of his release in April, two months after the stoppage.
Professional boxing remains an unforgiving business. Roster decisions ultimately depend on immediate performance and commercial viability.
The defeat marked Gvozdyk’s second loss in three fights, following a unanimous decision defeat to David Benavidez in 2024. At 39, Gvozdyk no longer fits the profile of a prospect with time to rebuild market value. While Zuffa Boxing has stated it does not prioritize undefeated records when building cards, losses still carry immediate financial consequences. Defeats lower ranking positions, weaken matchmaking options, and reduce public demand for future main events. Promoters require flexibility to cut ties when a fighter’s expected return on investment falls.
Gvozdyk previously achieved high-level success by capturing the WBC light heavyweight title. However, past accomplishments do not obligate a new promotion to fund the concluding phase of an aging fighter’s career. Zuffa Boxing continues to build its brand around commercial draws, television viewership, and strict cost controls. Moving forward without Gvozdyk allows the company to direct television dates and promotional capital toward fighters capable of generating long-term revenue.
