After being put in to bat, the Proteas posted 297/8 behind a century from Matthew Breetzke and an explosive 75 from Marco Jansen. Spinner Keshav Maharaj then claimed 4/20 to bowl out Australia for 230 in 41.2 overs.

South Africa initially recovered from 29/2 thanks to Breetzke, who scored 112 from 106 balls. He combined with Jansen for a pivotal 107-run sixth-wicket partnership, helping the hosts add 89 runs in the final 10 overs despite Nathan Ellis taking 3/57 for Australia.
