"A Test match of this quality, featuring the Proteas and Australia, deserved greater support in the stands," Heinrich Strydom, KZNCU CEO, said

The Kwa-Zulu Natal Cricket Union will launch an internal review into low spectator turnout during the Kingsmead Test between South Africa and Australia. Fewer than 20,000 spectators attended across the match at the 20,000-capacity venue, marking South Africa's first home fixture as World Test champions. KZNCU CEO Heinrich Strydom stated that the quality of the match deserved greater support and pledged to evaluate ways to make live cricket more accessible.
Several factors contributed to the sparse attendance, including nearby anti-immigration protests that led to city lockdown measures and military deployment. Economic factors also played a major role, with record petrol prices and general cost-of-living concerns highlighted by captain Temba Bavuma. Additionally, an altered seasonal calendar forced the Test into an early October window ahead of domestic exam periods.
