F1 is heading back to the continent of Africa with a new purpose-built racetrack to host the Rwandan Grand Prix.

Formula 1 has confirmed its return to Africa with Rwanda chosen to host the African Grand Prix starting in the early 2030s. The event marks F1's first race on the continent since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has long pushed for an African race, famously stating earlier this season that he would not retire until one was added to the schedule.
The 10-year agreement will feature a new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, roughly 40 kilometers south of Kigali and adjacent to the new Kigali International Airport. Rwanda was selected ahead of other candidates including South Africa, Morocco, and Nigeria, following close collaboration between Rwandan President Paul Kagame, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
