Formula 1 has signed a historic 10-year agreement with the government of Rwanda to host the African Grand Prix starting by 2030 at the earliest. The race will be held on a new natural road course located 40 kilometers south of Kigali near the under-construction Bugesera international airport. The agreement marks Formula 1's return to the African continent for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix.
The deal was formally announced at a press conference in Kigali featuring Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The new circuit is designed by former Formula 1 driver Alex Wurz and forms part of Rwanda's broader investment in tourism, infrastructure, and commercial development.
